IDENTIFYING LOCAL OPPORTUNITIES

1. Road work on Flagler is mostly finished, and now merchants are hoping their businesses recover

In Miami, there is a street (Flagler Street) that has been under construction for over two years. Businesses have lost money and some have even had to shut down. This has created a major problem for the business owners. The business owners thought the construction would be done quick, never did they expect it to go on for years. A salon owner talks about how he had savings but now he has run out. He has had this business for 16 years and he is nervous that the salon will have to shut down. Thankfully, the construction is almost done. All the pipes have been fixed and part of the street already have new roads and bike lanes.

2. Love those Mickey Mouse ice-cream bars at Disney World? You're in luck.

Disney World is a place that children and adults love. One of the things that the parks provide is the Micky Mouse ice-creams. People asked to have them in stores, and Disney answered. Starting February, the ice-cream bar will be sold in Publix. Personally, I think this is a problem. The ice-cream bars are exclusively sold in the parks and now they are going to be sold in stores so when people go to the parks, it won’t be as special. It is smart because Disney is everywhere and their bars are famous, but this could also cause a problem in the parks. This will also only benefit Florida because they have Publix.

3. More than 68,000 pounds of chicken recalled after wood was found by some customers

Three customers found wood in their chicken breast after purchasing. The company Perdue is in trouble because of this and decided to have a recall. The Simply Organic Gluten Free chicken had a recall starting on Thursday, January 17. Over 68,000 pounds of chicken were recalled and the company was able to track the production back to October. Perdue is returning the money for the all the customers that had a problem with their chicken.

4.  California man used Instagram to threaten friends, family of Parkland tragedy, FBI says

A California man, Brandon Fleury, went on Instagram to harass and intimidate family members and friends of the victims. Fleury is being charged of cyber threats such as kidnapping and harassment. He will be going to federal court in Fort Lauderdale. Although he is from California, he was threatening people in Florida, so he is being charged in Florida in the federal court system. He just wanted to gain popularity on Instagram and he claims that is why he did what he did. He did not gain popularity and is now just facing time for saying things he shouldn’t have even thought about.

5. Severe weather alerts include tornado warnings for Florida in advance of front

https://infoweb-newsbank-com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/apps/news/document-view?p=WORLDNEWS&t=pubname%3AMIHB%21Miami%2BHerald%252C%2BThe%2B%2528FL%2529/year%3A2019%212019/mody%3A0124%21January%2B24&f=advanced&action=browse&format=text&docref=news/17127C11221ABE50

Florida weather is typically warm, but like always, when a cold front is coming, the State is confused on how to deal with the weather. There was a tornado warning for Palm Beach. There were also marine warming in beaches around South Florida and waterspouts. South Florida was at risk of severe weather. This problem was directed to all the South Florida citizens so that they can stay safe.

FORMING AN OPPORTUNITY

There is an unmet need in schools around the United States. Safety is very important for children, especially in school, a place of learning. Schools should have a new way of staying protected and that can happen with a door that automatically closes when the school is on lockdown. Teachers and schools’ staff are trying new rules and protocols to stay protected in schools, but I feel like there is a better way to stay protected. The targeted customers are different school systems that want it because there are many students and teachers that feel unsafe going to school these days. I believe this is an opportunity that exists and can be solved.

I did some research and people do think that there needs to be more safety in schools. Many students avoid going to school because they don’t know if they will be going back home. Whether someone feels safe at school or not, they still believe there should be more protection. With the different questions I had asked to receive my research, I realized that the automatic lock can have a button. Every teacher in their classrooms will have a button in the room so as soon as they press it, the door locks.

By gathering all the information I could, I realized that my opportunity is needed. After looking more into it and asking students questions about the product, my original opportunity did not change much. The only thing I changed was the button, and that was something I decided to add from the feedback I was getting from others. I feel like with this opportunity, there will be less tragedies and it will help schools go back to being safe.

MY ENTREPRENEURSHIP STORY

My experience with entrepreneurship is not a lot. I did read a book by Francisco Guerra named, This is How You Do it, Kid. This book was how Guerra was always an entrepreneur and had many great ideas, and made a career out of it. One thing about entrepreneurship is that its okay to fail, and it will happen. Failing is part of the career because there is trial and error. Guerra created SnowMasters. SnowMasters are the snow machines that are seen in music videos, movies, Disney World, and many different places. Passion is very important to create a new idea or product. Guerra had a passion to make the SnowMaster and although it did not work the first time, he always tried to improve it.

I feel like I can relate a lot with entrepreneurship as a marketing major. Marketing is all about creativity and new ideas, just like entrepreneurship. I enrolled in this class to learn more about how new ideas can become more than an idea, it can come to life. I have had assignments in past classes that I need to think like an entrepreneur and it has been difficult to create a new product. I can try to sell a product the best I can (being a Marketing major), but creating it, not so easy. I hope to gain more knowledge in the entrepreneurship field so that I can use it in this class, other classes, and in my future career.

BUG LIST

There are a couple of things that bug me. In the following post, I am writing about all the things that bugs me and why it is a problem.
  1. There is always traffic in Miami, whether it be during rush hour or not.
    • Miami-Dade Country has 2.7 million people. There are people that work in Miami who are not locals and have to drive in and out.
  2. Working for a small marketing agency, clients always think they know better than the professional.
    • The clients know their brand better than the person that was hired, so they try to put their input, hoping that it will help them bring more customer.
  3. Living with nine people and the wifi keeps crashing.
    • This happens because there's only one router for nine people and its the cheapest wifi plan in Madrid, Spain.
  4. The heater inside my room in Madrid.
    • In Madrid, people that have gas heaters are under one system, so the whole building turns off the heaters at night. This happens to avoid fires.
  5. Customer Service phone lines can be slow and can be put on hold from anywhere between 10 minutes to hours.
    • This happens because a lot of people call at the same time or because the person that is in front go you has a larger problem that needs to be fixed right away.
  6. People who chew with their mouth open.
    • Some people cannot breath properly through their nose, so they have to chew with their mouth open so that they can get air.
  7. ATM Foreign Transaction Fees charge 3% of the money that is taken out and $5 for using the ATM.
    • This costs money for the foreign country and they have to pay the bank, employees, and the ATM companies.
  8. In the United States it is okay to go to war at 18 but have to be 21 to drink alcohol.
    • There was a study done in the US that drinking and driving rates lowers at the age of 21.
  9. Waiting in line to go to the girls bathroom.
    • The bathroom system is not efficient for girls. Unlike guys, we need to use toilet paper every time we go to the bathroom.
  10. The same brand of food is more expensive or cheaper in a grocery store.
    • Different brands have different partnerships so some stores make more of a profit than other stores.
  11. It is hard for millennials to find jobs after graduation.
    • In order to get a job after graduating from a Bachelor’s degree, the student needs to have an internship (or experience), be involved, and maintain a high GPA.
  12. When people open mouth sneeze in public.
    • This has to do with the way they were raised and they do not have manners. People who do this do not understand that this is unsanitary for others around them.
  13. The way movies portray Miami to be luxurious and sunny.
    • Not everyone in Miami is rich and owns a boat. It is also raining most of the time. The reasons movies do this, is to appeal to others and want them to visit the city.
  14. Having busy work for classes and not learning anything.
    • This happens because some professors rather read students work and give feedback instead of recording a lecture and teaching.
  15. Returning packages after ordering online.
    • Sometimes some companies do not have free returns and they make money off of it. Also, from experience, returning during the holidays will cause a backup and it will take a while to exchange or to get the money in return in the bank account.
  16. Airport losses you luggage and you have no luggage for a day or two.
    • This happens because luggages are misplaced or tags have been confused because of handwriting, or was not properly placed.
  17. When people do not pick up after themselves or litter on the streets.
    • There is a lack of trashcans in most streets so people litter or don’t pick up after themselves because it is faster than walking and finding a trash.
  18. Public Display of Affection when it is not needed.
    • People do this because they are happy and in love and want to show affection and show off their significant others.
  19. When you’re about to pay for a concert ticket and there is a huge hidden fee.
    • This is a marketing strategy. Once the customer picks their seat and get excited before paying, the fee comes in and then there is no other option but to pay because customers rather pay than not go.
  20. The price of sushi in Madrid.
    • Sushi is expensive (compared to Miami) because Madrid is in the center of Spain so they have to import everything and cannot get anything themselves.

It was difficult to think of 20 things that bug me. I have my top choices of things that bug me and it was hard to figure this out. I honestly had to ask people who are close to me to help me figure out what are things that they have noticed that have bothered me. A lot of things cannot be fixed, like transaction fees, PDA, people with bad manners, etc. On the other hand, there are things that can be fixed like littering, wifi, and bathrooms, just to name a few things. Overall, this was a good reflection to think about all the things that bug me, but there are a lot of things that should not and somehow it still does.
